Yes. This is the preferred platform for collecting data with a STEM Dotz.

Yes, however the STEM Dotz App used for data collection is not optimized to run on a tablet.

No. The app used for data collection is not supported on Windows, macOS* or Chrome OS computers.

*Apple computers with M1 processors running macOS 11 (or newer) can run iOS apps; however, the STEM Dotz App has not been tested on this platform.

The STEM Dotz App, available in the App Store™ and Google Play™, is required to use a STEM Dotz.

Yes. The STEM Dotz App is a free application available from the App Store™ and Google Play™.

Yes. An account using your name and phone number (as your unique identifier) is required to use the app.  No other personal information is collected, asked for, or stored.

No. The STEM Dotz app does not show any ads.

No. Only the STEM Dotz App can be used at this time.

STEM Dotz do not use a PIN to pair with a phone. If you are seeing a PIN entry request, you are likely trying to pair using your phone’s Settings. This is not required and should not be done.

Yes. The STEM Dotz App includes over 30 activities to help get started using a STEM Dotz.

Yes. The STEM Dotz App supports user-defined exploration using a STEM Dotz.

Data Interval -time between collected data points

  • Shortest: 40 millisecond (= 25 samples each second)
  • Longest: 1 hour (= 1 sample every 3600 seconds)

 

Data-Collection Duration -span of time data are collected

  • Shortest: 1 second
  • Longest: 24 hours

Yes. There are three options:

  • Data can be exported as a CSV file for additional analysis with a spreadsheet app.
  • Graphs, data tables, and other activity information can be exported as a PDF file for posting on social media or printing.
  • Completed activity and experiment files (Timeline records) can be shared with other STEM Dotz App users.

A STEM Dotz uses one 3V Lithium button-cell battery – CR2032.

Yes, a STEM Dotz comes with a battery already installed in the unit.

  • You will need a replacement CR2032 button-cell battery, a #1 Phillips-head screw driver, and a 3-mm flat-head screwdriver.
  • Use the #1 Phillips-head screw driver to remove two screws holding the STEM Dotz together.
  • Remove the back or your STEM Dotz and set it aside.
  • Use the flat-head screw driver to remove the battery from your STEM Dotz.
  • Place the battery in the holder, + side up, so that one edge is against the metal contact.
  • Carefully snap the battery into place.
  • Place the lid back on the STEM Dotz.
  • Make sure the case snaps closed, then test the power button to ensure your STEM Dotz will turn on.
  • Replace the screws and you are ready to collect more data.

No. A STEM Dotz should not get wet as water could damage the electronic components. Never submerge a STEM Dotz in a liquid.

Temperature, Pressure, Relative Humidity, Light, Accelerometer(3-axis), and Magnetometer(3-axis) sensors are included in a STEM Dotz.

Yes, any or all of the STEM Dotz sensors can be used in combination at the same time to collect data.

Yes, you can connect multiple* STEM Dotz at the same time to collect data.

*When connecting more than two STEM Dotz to the same phone, results will vary depending on your phone’s wireless radio and available memory.

No. A STEM Dotz cannot collect data without being connected to the STEM Dotz App.
